Can I tow a trailer on my car licence?

Can i tow a trailer with my car?-I'm a little confused with the rules when it comes to being able to tow a trailer with my road car.

Quote:

Car licences obtained on or after 1 January 1997
If you passed a car test on or after 1 January 1997 you're limited to vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes maximum authorised mass towing a trailer up to 750kgs, or a vehicle and trailer combination up to 3.5 tonnes MAM providing the MAM of the trailer doesn't exceed the unladen mass of the towing vehicle. You will need to pass an additional driving test in B+E if you wish to tow a caravan or trailer combination which exceeds these weight limits.

To me that says I can tow a trailer as long as the car, trailer and whatever is on the trailer does not exceed 3.5 tonnes. If I wanted to carry a larger load then I'd need to upgrade my licence so to speak.

Can anyone confirm this?

The direct.gov.uk website really confuses me and confused me even more when I emailed them asking for them to clarify it. I've got the A, BE, C1, C1E, D, D1 and GH provisional entitlements on my paper licence.

Answer:

Yes you are right, You can tow a trailer as long as means the total load falls under the weight limit, so it will have to be a relatively small trailer. Category B vehicles are cars - so you can tow a small trailer with a car.

If you want to tow anything larger, you would need to take a 'trailer test' to upgrade your licence

There is a website below that confirms this if that is any help!
